
Another house-museum nearby is Ventfort Hall, built by George Hale and Sarah Spencer Morgan, sister of J. P. Morgan, a century ago when Lenox was the chosen retreat of American wealth and fashion with over 100 “cottages” that dotted the local landscape, and it is the house where the movie “The Cider House Rules” was filmed. Other historic homes just a few minutes away are Arrowhead, the home of Herman Melville and where he wrote his most famous novel, Moby Dick; and Chesterwood, the home and studio of Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C..
